Description

Under limited supervision, performs various tasks associated with maintaining park facilities and grounds for use by the public. Work involves cleaning and setting up park shelters/facilities, mowing and edging grass, cutting trees/branches, repairing/maintaining equipment, assisting customers, maintaining records of park attendance, and performing related tasks. Work is performed in accordance with detailed instructions and established routines; however, the employee is required to be alert to apparent irregularities in the data and to notify appropriate personnel of such irregularities. Employee must exercise tact and courtesy in frequent contact with the public, and employ initiative and independent judgment in completing assigned tasks. Reports to Park Supervisor.

Essential Job Functions

  • Maintains park facilities for use by the public; prepares park facilities for daily use/operations; cleans and sets up shelters, lodge, or other facilities for use by individuals/groups with facility reservations; repairs damaged equipment and structures.
  • Performs general maintenance of park grounds, buildings, equipment, and related facilities; mows and edges park grounds; repairs structures and equipment; cuts down or removes dead, damaged, or diseased trees, limbs, or shrubs; rakes ground surfaces; digs holes/trenches and shovels/spreads materials; picks up litter/debris, empties trash containers, and transports trash to designated trash receptacle.
  • Inspects park facilities to identify problems, needed repairs, or other situations requiring attention, such as vandalism, inoperative lighting, or safety hazards; reports problem situations to supervisor.
  • Collects park entry fees from visitors and prepare for special events as required.
  • Trains new employees as needed.
  • Patrols the park and perform security checks at regular intervals.
  • Performs customer service functions; answers incoming telephone calls; provides information and assistance related to park facilities, activities, rentals, procedures, forms, fees, or other issues; conducts presentations for community groups as needed; responds to routine questions/complaints, researches problems, and initiates problem resolution.
  • Assists in monitoring inventory of department equipment and supplies; ensures availability of adequate materials to conduct work activities; initiates requests for new/replacement materials.
  • Compiles or monitors administrative and/or statistical data pertaining to department operations, such as park attendance and facility usage data; makes calculations, summarizes data, and prepares forms/reports.
  • Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, timesheets, facility attendance records, purchase requisitions, or other documents.
  • Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, facility attendance records, maps, policies, procedures, manuals, directories, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
  • Operates a personal computer, grounds maintenance tools, power tools, hand tools, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of word processing, e mail, or other computer programs.
  • Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, vendors, visitors, the public, community groups, outside agencies, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
  • Provides assistance to other employees or departments as needed.
  • May assist Park Ranger with all planning and implementation of site budgeting, data collection, site scheduling along with short and long term planning.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Required Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; supplemented by 1 year previous experience and/or training involving park maintenance, grounds maintenance, and equipment operation; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid Virginia driver's license.

Prefers commercial driver's license and CPR certification. Requires a valid driver's license.
