Firefighter-EMT: The final candidates must be available to attend a required Fire Academy (22-25 weeks), which is paid by the City of Colonial Heights.

  • Firefighter-EMT Basic
    • Salary: $56,585
  • Firefighter-EMT Advanced/Intermediate
    • Salary: $58,000
  • Firefighter-Paramedic
    • Salary: $62,244

Examples of Duties

  • Provides fire suppression services.
  • Provides emergency medical care services.
  • Ensures that all equipment and facilities are well maintained and available for use.
  • Develops and presents public education materials.
  • Operates vehicles and equipment.
  • Addresses public inquiries.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience

Minimum Requirements:

  • High School diploma or equivalent required. Higher qualifications may be required to maintain employment and/or to advance in career development.
  • Valid Virginia Driver's License.
  • Successfully pass all phases of our fire selection process, which will include a written examination, physical ability test, background investigation, medical and drug screening.
  • Successfully complete a 22-25 week recruit academy.
  • Certification:
    • Possess a current unexpired Commonwealth of Virginia Advanced EMT, Intermediate, or Paramedic certification, and MUST continue to practice under this certification during the course of employment.
  • Individuals who do not possess one of the above EMS certifications MUST obtain a Commonwealth of Virginia Advanced EMT certification within 3 years (36-months) of initial employment and continue to practice under this certification during the course of employment.
  • Successful candidate will be required to maintain all Fire & EMS certifications throughout employment.
  • Required to comply with a No Tobacco Use Agreement.
Desirable:
  • Current unexpired Commonwealth of Virginia certified EMT, A-EMT, Intermediate, or Paramedic certification.
  • Current Virginia Department of Fire Programs Fire Fighter I & II, Hazardous Materials - Operations Level, and EVOC III.
  • Formal and structured paramilitary recruit academy completion.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing, lifting of objects weighing in excess of 74 pounds, moving in areas of difficult or dangerous access.

The work environment involves extremely high risks with exposure to potentially life threatening situations or unusual environmental stress, which requires a full range of safety and other precautions, but in some cases, these precautions cannot prevent injury, illness, or possibly death.
